The mission of the Teacher Preparation Department is to prepare students to become sensitive, caring, and reflective teachers, who are not only pedagogically skilled, but are inspired and desire to be lifelong learners.
“We want our students to be well-rounded and knowledgeable in all aspects of child development and best teaching practices, but also well informed advocates for all learners,” Department Chair Antoinette M. Howard said.
Howard adds “Combined, we have over 235 years of teaching experience here at Hudson Valley, not including the well over 300 years of teaching in early childhood, elementary and secondary education settings that our faculty members brought with them.” Department members currently serve on more than 60 committees or boards, both on and off campus, and are all involved in community service and volunteerism in some way.
But it’s not all work and no play. “Each year, we plan a get together to help build upon our team building skills and relationships. Last year, we visited Escape the Mystery Room in Albany. In a room full of highly-educated professors, we couldn’t get out!”
